Bio

Yoshiko Mukai Williamson's Portrait in her studio, July 2025

Born in Osaka, Japan, and based in Brooklyn, NY, she creates abstract mixed media works with a strong fiber art sensibility.

She grew up in her parents’ women’s clothing store in Japan, surrounded by fabrics, threads, and sewing tools. The shop mainly sold ready-made garments, but also offered custom orders and alterations—a tactile environment that shaped her sensitivity to materials from an early age.

Her creative process begins with inner chaos and evolves through spontaneous dialogue with what unfolds in front of her—each piece feels like something that hatched from within and came alive on its own.

After backpacking solo through 13 countries—from China, Russia, and across Europe—she arrived in New York on New Year’s Day in 1994. What was meant to be a one-year stay turned into a life. Today, she continues to walk through art and life as one continuous journey—unmapped, guided by instinct, curiosity, and serendipity.

With a background in fashion editing, graphic design, and content creation, she now runs an online vintage jewelry shop and an independent publishing studio. For her, both art and life are a journey—one led by curiosity, serendipity, and self-discovery. She has taken numerous continuing education courses at art institutions and universities in New York City, exploring fiber art, mixed media, and photography as visual storytelling.
